Restricted or prohibited product

What this means

Meta has flagged your product as falling into a restricted category — common offenders include weapons, tobacco/vaping, supplements making health claims, adult products, and CBD. Some categories are outright banned; others need pre-approval.

Why this happens

Meta runs an ML classifier across product titles, descriptions, and images. Trigger words ("detox", "miracle", "pre-roll", "unregulated") in copy can wrongly classify a benign product. Sometimes the image alone (e.g., a knife photo) triggers it.

How to fix it

  1. Review the product title, description, and image against Meta's Commerce Policies. Look for words and visuals that match restricted categories.
  2. Rewrite copy to remove ambiguous trigger language — substitute health claims with descriptive product attributes.
  3. If your product is actually permitted but mistakenly flagged, request a manual review through Commerce Manager.
  4. For genuinely restricted categories (alcohol, supplements with claims), get pre-approval through Meta's gated category program before listing.
  5. Some categories cannot be listed at all on Meta — accept this and exclude them from the Meta feed.
