Title or description contains prohibited words

What this means

Error 240 fires when eBay's policy filter detects prohibited terms in the listing title or description. The listing is blocked until the offending text is removed.

Why this happens

eBay maintains a blocklist of trademarked terms, illegal item references, replicas/fakes language, weapons-related phrases, and adult terms. Innocuous-looking phrases ('Rolex-style', 'looks like Gucci') trigger the trademark filter. Words like 'replica' or 'knockoff' fail outright in many categories.

How to fix it

  1. Review the title and description for any reference to other brands or trademarked terms.
  2. Remove comparative language ('similar to X', 'looks like Y') and stick to the actual brand.
  3. Strip terms like 'replica', 'knockoff', 'inspired by', 'fake'.
  4. Avoid weapons-related descriptors even for kitchen/tool products.
  5. Resubmit once the copy is cleaned.
