Error 8550 — GTIN exemption required but not applied

What this means

Your product doesn't have a GTIN/UPC/EAN, but the category requires one — and you haven't applied for a GTIN exemption. Amazon won't create the listing without either a real GTIN or an active exemption.

Why this happens

Common for private-label products, handmade items, bundles, and wholesale-only inventory. Amazon will exempt these on a per-brand, per-category basis if you can prove ownership.

How to fix it

  1. Apply for a GTIN exemption: Seller Central → Inventory → Add a Product → 'Apply for a GTIN exemption'.
  2. Provide proof you own the brand: trademark certificate, brand registry enrollment, or letter on company letterhead.
  3. Approval is per brand + per category — you may need separate exemptions for the same brand in different categories.
  4. Approval typically takes 1–3 business days. Once approved, you can list without a GTIN.
